I’ll Be in Your Camp – Will You Be in Mine?

I’ll Be in Your Camp Will You Be in Mine is a project that connected two art educational communities, a second-level school and third-level university situated in the same neighbourhood but without awareness of each other.

Over the autumn and spring terms of 2016 and 2017, Art School invited Karl Burke and Naomi Sex to work with students of St Paul’s Christian Brothers’ School (the Brunner) in Dublin 7, opening up a relationship between the school and Technical University Dublin (TUD), Grangegorman, at which the artists lecture. The encounter was framed in two parts by a series of workshops held by each of the two artists.

Burke set students the task of forming new spatial layouts within the classroom, limiting use of materials to the classroom furniture at hand and electrical tape. Working in groups, students delimited new boundaries and structures using desks and chairs in new assemblages. Sex introduced the students to the print facilities at TUD, showing students the work of current 1st years and guiding them in the process of etching. With assistance, students produced their own prints; from scratching the waxed plate, through the acid rinse, and finally pressing ink to paper.

This project was commissioned within ‘…the lives we live’, the Grangegorman Public Art Programme.
