The Masterplan

The Masterplan engaged the collective student voice in the context of the redevelopment of their school’s neighbourhood through aggregating a spoken word choir.

In the spring-summer term of 2016, Art School invited artists Ella DeBurca and John Beattie to work in partnership with multiple classes and teachers in Dublin 7 Educate Together, Grangegorman. Together they generated a discussion concerning knowledge, the internet, autonomous learning and the community of the classroom. The choir chanted out the question ‘What is school for?’, changing speed according to the hand signals of their conductor. The cacophony of answers were then streamlined into a series of white books, shelved with a set of speakers playing out the spoken opera for the exhibition It’s Very New School in Rua Ed, 2017.
